A research article titled “Significance of Lower Body Postures in Chair- Design,” from a university in South Korea, has now sought to investigate this. The study focused on the trunk-thigh angle and the knee angle. Using sensors that measured muscle activity, the researchers examined changes in various back and neck angles as the study participants sat in six different sitting positions.
The results showed that sitting with a greater angle between the torso and thighs, combined with a smaller knee angle, resulted in a more upright posture of the back and neck. This posture not only supports a more natural spine, but also reduces muscle strain in the back.
In practice, this means that if you are making an investment for yourself or your company, choose ergonomic chairs that offer easy adjustment of the thigh and torso angle so that the chair can be adapted to each individual. This allows you to adjust your sitting position to maintain a natural spine. You should also choose a dynamic chair that promotes movement, which helps to maintain muscle activity and circulation, reducing the risks associated with prolonged sitting.
